REC trading norms announced in India

In January 2010, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) of India announced renewable energy certificate (REC) norms in an attempt to encourage investments in the renewable energy sector. A REEEP-funded project together with IREDA is currently working to outline the specifics of the implementation.

Huang Ming wins ‘alternative Nobel Prize’

The founder of Himin Solar, Huang Ming has been named one of the four winners of the 2011 Right Livelihood Awards, known informally as the alternative Nobel prize. According to the Swedish-based foundation that gives the award, he was honored for “his outstanding success in the development and mass-deployment of cutting-edge technologies for harnessing solar energy, thereby showing how dynamic emerging economies can contribute to resolving the global crisis of anthropogenic climate change.”

Another AFRICEF project reaches financial close

REEEP recently financed a project that enabled the expansion of PFAN (Private Financing Advisory Network), a coaching and investor matchmaking service to Mozambique and Uganda. The project quickly bore fruit: four of the finalists at the 2010 Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing (AFRICEF) came from one of these two countries. And in the end, the two winners of the CTI PFAN Clean Energy Financing Award 2010 were a mini-hydro project in Uganda that had benefited from REEEP-funded PFAN coaching, and a micro-solar distribution project by Barefoot Power Pty. Ltd.

Demo home at IDEAAS center for decentralised generation

Open Data opens horizons for renewable energy

With more than 90,000 users pers month, www.reegle.info is quickly establishing itself as a definitive reference source for reliable information on clean energy. Florian Bauer, REEEP’s Operations and IT Director has some specific ideas on how to keep the reegle platform at the cutting edge of clean energy, and these ideas cluster around a concept called Open Data. The term refers to a movement where institutions are making their existing data available via the web in a standardized, machine-readable format and - just as importantly – are opening it for cost-free re-use by third parties.

Fiji hotel EE project labelled "a world first" at COP16

During the Cancun conference, Fiji’s acting Environment permanent secretary Saverio Baleikanacea was quoted in the Fiji Times as saying that “the proposed Fijian Hotel Clean Development Program will be a world first for the tourism sector." This REEEP-funded project with the Greenlight Technology Group aims to create an alliance of stakeholders in Fiji’s hotels and resorts sector to widen the uptake of renewable energy. The sector is estimated to account for a quarter of that nation's economy.
